HOBY MD Past President – Carol Applegate

Carol Applegate has volunteered on the Board since 1992 and serves now as Past Corporate Board President of HOBY Maryland. She was Board President from 2008 until 2015. She started seminar volunteering in 1983 in fundraising and as a facilitator in 1984. She just attended her 40th Maryland seminar. From facilitator to Director, PR, Communications Dir, Gift-in-Kind, Team Alumni Dir, Program Dir, Recruitment Dir, Thank You Dir, Operations Dir, Cooperating Organizations Dir, Vice Chair and then Seminar Chair from 1994-1996, and again 2003-2008, she has completed what was asked of her.
Nationally, Carol has also volunteered on the Field Operations and Program committee. Carol organized and edited the monthly HOBY International newsletter (back in the days of paper and mail). At WLC, she was multiple years’ day volunteer, facilitator twice, Operations Chair twice, Program Dir twice and a Team Alumni Dir. She was recognized by HOBY International as a National Volunteer of the Year in 2007.
Professionally, Carol is a Certified Ophthalmic Technician and Research Coordinator. She retired after 20 years at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and moved to The Greater Baltimore Medical Center where she is part time at Hoover Low Vision & Rehabilitation. She earned BA and MLA degrees from Johns Hopkins University. For her volunteer service she was awarded a Senatorship from the US Jaycees. She serves as president of the Jacksonville Optimist Club. Carol enjoys cooking, traveling, and gardening around her koi pond. Carol and Pat have been married nearly 55 years, have two children and two grandchildren. She loves seeing the many friends she has made in HOBY and watching the student ambassadors grow into adulthood, develop their leadership skills and continue to “give back” and volunteer.
